Computer Related Injuries

A computer is a vital tool in many different occupations. However, long periods of working at a computer can increase the chance of developing an injury. Muscle and joint pains of the neck and shoulders, overuse injuries of the upper limbs and eye strain can result from inappropriate computer use. The risks can be reduced or eliminated with improved posture and good working habits. The major Computer-related injuries are

  • Computer vision syndrome: Symptoms include headache, blurred vision, neck pain, fatigue, dry eyes, difficulty in focusing.

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome: Symptoms include numbness of the hand especially the thumb, index, middle and part of fourth fingers, burning sensations and cramps, decreased grip strength, sharp shooting pains in forearms.

  • Cervical disc degeneration: Symptoms include ache or stiffness in neck and shoulder, occasional headaches, numbness in neck arms and hands, shooting pain radiating down the arm.

  • Tennis elbow: Symptoms include pain at the outside of the elbow, weakness in the wrist, difficulty in shaking hands.

  • Lumbar disc degeneration: Symptoms include pain generally centered on the lower back radiating to hips and legs, pains frequently worse while sitting, intensified pain on bending, twisting, or lifting.
